Student-Preceptor Agreement

Before beginning clinical experience that will be documented through the Portfolio Evaluation Process, the student and each NARM Registered Preceptor must enter into a written agreement describing the terms of their educational and working relationship.

The agreement must clearly address:

  • the roles and responsibilities of the student and preceptor;
  • the student’s clinical duties and scope of participation;
  • expectations for supervision and availability;
  • a plan for regular review of the student’s progress;
  • the criteria the preceptor will use to determine whether clinical experience and skills may be verified;
  • the process and expected timeline for completing NARM documentation;
  • any financial arrangement between the student and preceptor, including compensation or fees, if applicable; and
  • the process for resolving concerns or disputes, including the NARM procedures available when the student and preceptor are unable to resolve a conflict directly.

The agreement should be reviewed periodically and updated when responsibilities, practice arrangements, or educational expectations change. Both parties should retain a copy of the current signed agreement.

The agreement does not require a preceptor to verify clinical experience or skills that the preceptor did not directly supervise or does not determine were performed competently.
