Preceptor Requirements (PEP)

Clinical experience and skills documented through the Portfolio Evaluation Process must be supervised and verified by a qualified NARM Registered Preceptor.

To qualify as a NARM Registered Preceptor, an individual must:

  • hold a current credential as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM), Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM), or Certified Midwife (CM), or be a licensed practitioner legally authorized by a jurisdiction to provide maternity care;
  • have at least three years of experience after initial credentialing or have attended at least 50 additional births as a primary or co-primary practitioner after initial credentialing;
  • have attended at least 10 out-of-hospital births during the preceding three years; and
  • complete and maintain current registration with NARM.

A preceptor must be registered with NARM before supervising or signing clinical experience or skills that will be submitted as part of a PEP application. The candidate is responsible for confirming that each preceptor’s registration is current.

The preceptor must be physically present and directly supervising the candidate when clinical care or skills are performed for verification. The preceptor may sign only for experience and skills that the preceptor personally supervised and determined were performed competently.

The preceptor retains responsibility for the care provided under supervision and makes the final determination about whether the candidate has met the requirements for satisfactory performance. A preceptor must not sign documentation for experience or skills that were not directly observed or that did not meet the preceptor’s expectations for competent performance.

Candidates may complete their clinical education with more than one NARM Registered Preceptor. Each preceptor must verify only the experience and skills completed under that preceptor’s supervision and must submit all required supporting documentation.
